BEYOND THE TITLE
And one of the hardest things, whether it's a business oriented gathering or a social one is, oh, so what do you do? That question for me was always tied to a title and a company. And so I felt lost when I answered that for a while.
But through this program, I really helped to nail down my X, Y, D statements... I'm a growth oriented operator. Most recently I was here, here's where I'm going next. And so it provided me just a much better way to define who I am.
“I learned that I'm bigger than one company, than one title, than one role.”
THE CONVERSATION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
This will come as no surprise, but it all came through my network... when Lynn was telling this gentleman about me and said, Amy's no longer with live ops and his immediate response was, my gosh, she's available. Immediately that was the seed planted.
You were doing the role plays talking about when you're talking with the CEO, you've got about 15 minutes to captivate them and you want to be the doctor and diagnose, but you also have to have some confidence behind it... We had that session on Wednesday and I'm out with him on that Friday and it just gave me a different edge and confidence to the conversation.
Clearly you picked up the doctor framework, you dove in and you positioned yourself... when you became the only viable solution, he didn't even, yes, for him to not even want to look at other options, just demonstrates how well you executed in that... You just killed the competition with one shot. That's incredible.
“The best way to beat him is not have him.”
NEGOTIATING FROM VALUE
So they provided this range, which was slightly below where I'd want it to be. So I countered with something that was closer to where I wanted... I said, I think we're close. I'm really excited about this. I've not seen the full benefits, but here's where my value is. And we really wordsmith that to say, it's not where I want it to be. It's this is my value and I know it. So let's talk about how we get there.
I have a call in three hours with this second company. I would love to let them know that I've already accepted your job, but we've got to get through, I want to make sure we're there.
“It's this is my value and I know it. So let's talk about how we get there.”
CHOOSING PURPOSE OVER A BIGGER PAYCHECK
So I saw you clearly used one of the companies as leverage to create urgency and demand. So what made you go with one company over the other?
Values is probably one of the biggest things... I really liked that purpose oriented work. That's a big thing for me.
The second thing was the other role would have kept me really in the BPO contact center space. And part of why I wanted the help from [Career Evolved] is to pivot to a different industry... I wouldn't have had my own team to help nurture and mentor. I wouldn't have had a seat at the table that makes the main decisions. Yes, it was a much larger company. So I could have perhaps gotten more money or there could have been growth down the road, but I felt like I could make a much bigger impact at the organization I selected.
“It's not a good use of time... it's much better to be hitting the ground, making connections.”
