THE CHALLENGE

A second executive layoff hit harder than the first, shaking the confidence of someone used to excelling at everything she touched.

THE SHIFT

She stopped chasing polish and quick fixes, did the identity work she had resisted, and let go of needing to be chosen.

THE OUTCOME

She built fractional executive work on her own terms, proving her value through delivery and discovering what made her genuinely unique.

A Note From The Founder

Olivia Gamber, CEO

Jenee Hall came to Career Evolved after being laid off from an executive role for the second time in her career. The first layoff had been devastating in ways that took months to recover from, and she knew she could not afford to repeat that same cycle of applying, waiting, and getting nothing back.

What struck me from the start was how accomplished Jenee already was. She had run companies, driven revenue, and never been someone who settled for less than excelling. But high achievement does not make you immune to self-doubt in a job market this disrupted, and Jenee was honest about needing an accountability partner who actually cared about her outcome, not just her payment.

Her transformation was not about polishing a resume or chasing a perfect LinkedIn hook. It was about doing the identity work she initially resisted, separating her self-worth from a job title, and learning to trust the value she brought even when the market made her wait for it. That shift opened the door to fractional executive work she had never considered before, and it became the proof she needed that her expertise was never in question.

LAID OFF, AGAIN

Olivia Gamber

Welcome back to another episode of the Career Evolved podcast and I'm here with [Jenee] Hall and she's become a friend and also an executive coach slash strategic advisor here at Career Evolved and I mean just witnessing your journey from when we first met I knew she was going to be a star in the community but it just really ended up going so many different ways with all the consulting opportunities you really became a mentor in the community and getting this amazing breakthrough through the community I'm just excited to share this story because I think you have a unique journey and it wasn't just a quick path right so what brought you to Career Evolved

“I was laid off from an executive role back in January and a couple years ago I'd been laid off once before”

DOING THE IDENTITY WORK

“I think there was never there's never anything I've done in my life where I haven't excelled”

Olivia Gamber

double whammy I know and I think that ultimately what I noticed is like we talk a lot about identity transformation and now that you're also an executive coach I think I want to point out why I was like I've got to get [Jenee] to be one of my coaches because when you started to show resourcefulness in this market where there were a couple opportunities that weren't quite ready for you because you bring so much power and yeah you're expensive as you should be right because of the value but when you really want that kind of talent but you're not ready for it because maybe revenue is down or you're waiting on an investor whatever it is you are able to flip the script and get land fractional executive opportunities

Jenee Hall

I think for me I hesitated doing the identity work at first right so those self-limiting beliefs I was like I'm fine I'm competent I don't need anybody I don't need help even though like I said I wanted more accountability I wanted somebody to do this with me but I think I wanted somebody to really tell me here are all the secrets of how you get a job right I think that's what I was expecting so then when I came in I had this identity work and I had to like say all the things that were like beliefs that I had that were holding me back that was really interesting and it's interesting too because it's not like I did like I wrote those self-limiting beliefs

TRUSTING THE VALUE YOU BRING

Olivia Gamber

honestly one of these could be a pathway to a potential c-suite opportunity right so it's like this is a game changer and that's what people don't understand they're gonna hire a c-suite because they solve a really big problem and they can't risk getting that wrong because that maker breaks their year right especially with the type of roles you're looking at you're a key player to execute and so being willing to have the confidence and self-trust that I know I can deliver value and let me prove it to you on a fractional basis what we've seen and I think you even started to put some spreadsheets together hey this could actually be very lucrative right because most of these people want you long term anyway they don't they actually need it yeah I like that that's the growth that's why I keep preaching this to everyone at CE and saying guys the fastest growing role right now is consultant

Olivia Gamber

but something will trust that your value is coming back and I think that's one of the best advice you could give to people because it's so easy to get attached to any one company and right now that's the biggest risk of all is just being all in on anyone because there's just a lot of uncontrollables that none of us control anything right now but what we do control is our energy and our effort and our strategy how we're showing up and there still is a lot of opportunity in the market I know people are scared and watching the news and all the fear on AI and everything but what people are seeing at least I want to leave people with some hope is actually people want real leaders want to serve and that's desperately needed to provide the path forward because many markets are disrupted they need leadership

“I think that's where every company is looking to employ some sort of AI to help where it's needed but they're not looking to replace everything with AI they're still looking for a human”

[Question shown on screen]: What brought you to Career Evolved?

Jenee: I was laid off um from an executive role uh back in January and um a couple years ago I'd been laid off once before so to be laid off a second time was like ultra devastating to my myself just my self-confidence um you know if it happens once you think like how that was just that that thing that happened right when it happens twice you start to think like oh it's me like I'm the common thread here um and so I realized like when I was um when I was laid off before

Jenee: know it took me six months uh to really actually dig myself even out of like a huge depression to be honest um and I didn't want to do that again and so

[Question shown on screen]: What was going through your mind, is this different than it's been in the past?

Jenee: I had really like um you know said like a lot of my personal like self-worth was related to my work so without work I didn't have that I didn't

Jenee: of me and I shouldn't have right because at the end of the day who really cares but I think I had to let that part of my ego die as well like I kept thinking like I'm just somebody's gonna like choose me and I wanted to be chosen I

[Question shown on screen]: How did you face that kind of resistance?

Jenee: I was so focused on being perfect uh that I wasn't being real I wasn't being myself and I

Jenee: and I probably evaluated like I don't know I made a spreadsheet I remember sharing with you Olivia there was like six different programs that I evaluated and all of them uh didn't it was very clear like they didn't I didn't feel like they cared about me um they answered my questions and you know I put that all on the sheet but like who really like had a connection and and really showing that sincerity with me and so um yeah I I connected with you um

[Question shown on screen]: Why did you feel like you needed a thought partner or a strategy through this and a network?

Jenee: I think for me it was um I needed a little bit of an accountability partner um I can I can do anything but when the self-doubt start creeping in um you know and if somebody doesn't really care about you like it you know they don't care if I if I drop off they've taken my money yeah but like what is there left to do so um I think for me I really I knew I needed something different and you just had really connected with me of like no no you are different and you need to do something different

[Question shown on screen]: Why do you think you were able to get his trust without that?

Jenee: why are you hiring hiring for pricing right now like what's changed in the business that makes you guys want to hire for this right now so I

[Question shown on screen]: You were able to flip the script and land fractional executive opportunities on your way to the job. Could you share a bit about that?

Jenee: so where I had nothing before and I was collecting unemployment for a while suddenly then you know I had a little bit of like you know design work which is a passion of mine and then I turned these two fractional roles into something like real that that gave me real validation and feedback that

[Question shown on screen]: Could you see those someday potentially being a full-time opportunity?

Jenee: spoiler alert I accepted a full-time position um

Jenee: so where I thought I had nothing I created two things that actually created two full-time paths for me and and a third one actually came up out of the blue right

[Question shown on screen]: Can you talk about that process, because that's ultimately how you landed these opportunities?

Jenee: so it's like five or six interviews later um you know and it's it's an

[Question shown on screen]: The mindset transformation you'd have to go through to be bold and direct and make an offer?

Jenee: but I had to first let go of uh what people thought of me what you know what my LinkedIn says right so that like again ego death like I had to sort of let go of that

[Question shown on screen]: What is the biggest takeaway from this process?

Jenee: I hesitated doing the identity work at first right so those self-limiting beliefs I was like I'm fine I'm competent I don't need anybody I don't need

Jenee: it's interesting too because it's not like I I did like I wrote those self-limiting beliefs and they just like went away from there because I did that work I recognize when they when they creep up again and when they creep up again I don't listen to them I say that's not true
