The Challenge

Job ended at Ace Films inside a disrupted entertainment industry. Michael searched alone, at home, sending three-paragraph emails built entirely around his own story in what he calls the toughest job market in a decade.

The Shift

A hot-seat coaching moment forced him to see his outreach as transactional. He rebuilt his approach around what the employer needed from him, not his catalog of production credits.

The Outcome

Landed as Event Director for medical device and manufacturing conferences, running global-scale events that flex from a few hundred attendees to 14,000.

A Note From The Founder

Olivia Gamber, CEO

When Michael first found us, he was still employed, but he already knew the end date. His job at Ace Films was closing, entertainment was contracting under him, and he could feel the search coming before it arrived.

He did what most people do first. He led with his story. Power Rangers, big productions, big names. Three-paragraph emails that were, in his own words, all about him and all about being transactional. It wasn't landing, and the slow summer market only made the isolation heavier.

The turn came in a session where I told him plainly that it wasn't working, and that he had to look at this as what he was going to do for them, not what he had already done for someone else. Once he saw it, he couldn't unsee it. That's the story I want to share, because it's the same reframe most people in a disrupted industry need and resist.

DOING IT THE OLD WAY

Olivia Gamber

So let's go back to the beginning. When we first got started, you chose to enroll in the Career Vault Processing Program. Where were you when we met and why did you choose to begin this journey?

Michael

Well, when I first talked to you, I was still employed knowing that there was an end date for my job at Ace Films... It's not really chasing open jobs. It's really starting conversations with executives and CEOs. This was in May of last year. And this was when my job had ended and I had to pull the trigger because doing it the old way just wasn't working.

Michael

It wasn't. And it really, especially with summer coming up where things are slow, that was not a good time either... And when you're looking for a job and at home now, not in an office and you're alone, it's a big drain on the mindset, but I've always said I'm a very optimistic person, a very positive individual. So my attitude from day one was I just need one yes.

“My attitude from day one was I just need one yes.”

THE HOT SEAT

Olivia Gamber

And I think it's just awesome to see you were willing to just, hey, I'm ready, I'm on the hot seat. And even being like a very skilled marketer, you're really good at relationships. This was different because you're the product, right?... I don't think people are prepared for the level of transformation required to compete in this executive market. You have to evolve or you're going to expire. You chose to evolve.

“You got to look at this as what are you going to do for them. And it became all about them.”

IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU ANYMORE

Michael

The first time when you talk to the initial HR person, yes, they do want to know your story. But after that, once you start meeting with the people you're going to be working for and the EVPs, it's not about you. It's really about listening, learning what they want for this position and then telling them, this is how I view things, and it's really about them. And that was a big transformation because you don't have to sell yourself anymore.

It's about, okay, now you're meeting with the executives, be an executive, be a leader. How would you as a leader do what they want you to do? It's not about what I did with the Power Rangers or what I did for, it's not about that anymore.

Olivia Gamber

You were so passionate about your stories, but now you got to, it's more, it's less about the story, more about the demonstrated value. And I think you learned the doctor framework and consultative selling.

Michael

It's about the skills. It's not about who I did it for. It's what I did. And you can transform that into other categories of whether it's tech, entertainment, consumer products. And now I'm working with medical devices... it works no matter what industry, you're doing an event, an event is an event.

“It's not about what I did with the Power Rangers or what I did for, it's not about that anymore.”

ONE YES

Michael

It's medical devices, but the company that I'm working for is medical devices and manufacturing... I'm very fortunate that the company I work for is based out of London and they do everything from Magic, which is the fashion industry conferences, to renewable energy conferences.

Olivia Gamber

So you pivoted to a completely new industry and you're now feeling confident you can be successful there. What's your job title?

Michael

I will be the event director for the MDNM, which is medical devices and manufacturing conferences... the big one was in Anaheim, which was last month. And then we have an East coast one in Boston. So my next focus after helping them wrap up the one in Anaheim will be Boston in August.

Michael

Just don't give up. You got to just keep going up to bat. And even if you keep striking out, you're going to get that hit and reaching out to people, whether it's people in our community with [Career Evolved], there's amazing people there to talk to... you got to keep saying, I want to stay on your radar. I'd love to get that 15 minute call, set up your calendar link so that you can just send it to him.

“Just don't give up. You got to just keep going up to bat. And even if you keep striking out, you're going to get that hit.”

Ready to Stop Applying?

Michael pivoted out of a disrupted industry by changing what he led with, not by sending more resumes. If you're ready to stop selling your story and start solving the buyer's problem, let's talk.

[Question shown on screen]: So tell me about the challenges because I know this was not an easy journey.

Michael: And I realized after that conversation of you just saying, no, it's not the way to do it, Michael. And you got to look at this as what are you going to do for them? And it became all about them. And then I realized these three paragraph emails I was sending out to people was all about me and all about being transactional. And once I saw it, that's not the way you

Olivia: do want to know like, what's the biggest win you're celebrating? What, like, what are you most proud of? Obviously the result, but what else?

Michael: it's not about that. It's about, okay, now you're, you're meeting with the executives, be an executive, be a leader. How would you as a leader do what they want you to do? It's not about what I did with the Power Rangers or what I did for, it's not about that anymore.

Michael: Just don't give up. I mean, you got to just keep going up to bat. And even if you keep striking out, you're going to get that hit

Olivia: how they can be as impactful in this completely new space. Like you, what's the new industry you pivoted to and what's your name?

Michael: It's medical devices, but the company that I'm working for is medical devices and manufacturing.

Michael: I will be the, the event director for the, for the MDNM, which is medical devices and manufacturing conferences. And

[Question shown on screen]: What's your job title?

Michael: So my next focus after helping them wrap up the one in Anaheim will be Boston in August.

Olivia: How many events are they doing a year typically?

Michael: mean, the company overall has hundreds, if not thousands. So,

Olivia: Okay. You're doing the larger scale ones.

Michael: Yes. Yeah.

Olivia: Well, that's exciting. So it sounds like you prefer the big, huge events. Cause that's kind of where you thrive with the bigger production.

Michael: whether it's for, you know, a thousand people, or if it's for 14,000 people, it's all the same. It's

Olivia: Can you talk about like the biggest like skill and cause you got an edge now against everyone that does what you do because you've built this identity, right. And these skills to sell and market. Yeah.

Michael: right. It's about the skills. It's not about who I did it for. It's what I did. And you can transform that into other categories of, you know, whether it's tech, entertainment, consumer products.

Michael: it's not about me. I don't have to, now I'm in the process. Now, the first time when you talk to the initial HR person, yes, they do want to know kind of your story. But after that, once you start meeting with the people you're going to be working for and the EVPs, it's not about you. It's really about listening, learning what they want, you know, for this position and then telling them, this is how, you know, I kind of view things and it's really about them. And,

Michael: once I understood that's what they're looking for, I knew how to tell them that I can accomplish this and I can bring, you know, this background and great knowledge I have to just continue to make it fun for everybody. Cause that's

Michael: in a previous one, one that I had made it to talk to the president of, of a company, I think I made a mistake there because I started selling myself again. And I

Michael: my attitude from day one was I just need one yes.

[Question shown on screen]: How you scale it. What would you tell them?

Michael: reaching out to people, whether it's people in our community with the, with Career Evolved, there's amazing people there to talk to. In addition to that, there's great alumni that I've been able to talk to that have helped me in some ways. And it's just, you, like I said, you just need that one yes. So keep going at it, keep reaching out to people,
