WHERE PAUL STARTED
Congratulations, sir... tell us a little bit about your experience with Career Evolved, your offer at Rocket Lab, and overall, how you're feeling?
I haven't been the most involved with the community, but I try to read the course material. And then when I'm job hunting... it does help me a lot, when I'm struggling. So I just read the course material and try to center myself. And then just, okay, just follow the process. Just figure out every detail about what I can do better.
“I'm not really good at interview. I get really nervous about interview, like for me to prepare one interview, I'll spend at least two or three days just for one interview.”
THE TURN: A NEW ANSWER TO AN OLD QUESTION
The interviews with Rocket Lab, they were very technical... we had to pivot the Career Evolved method from the standpoint of not only just the relational aspect, but the relational plus the technical aspect... How do you feel like that really helped you seal the deal?
It's more demanding now for the job... You have to know how your response, how you frame your response are related to them, and that's for sure.
What I do is I read the job description, and then see what are the two or three highlights that they're looking for. So before interview, within that 90% of the time, they'll ask me, tell you about yourself. So I just point out, when I look at the job description, I see X, Y, Z are things important. Do you want me to reframe my background around this highlight area? 90% of the time, they'll say yeah, sure. So then you just highlight your experience based on those things they care for.
THE WORK: FOUR PANELS, THREE HOURS
It was like three hours worth of interviewing for this. There was like four different leaders you had to meet with all in different focuses of Rocket Lab. You had Ian with quality, Israel with operations, Scott with procurement, and then of course Raju with the entire global strategy... So was that a new experience for you or was it difficult for you?
Technically I'll have, for me, I'm not really good at interview... So let alone you have two or three interviews in one day. So that was a lot. But yeah, I think the main thing is I really think it's the first quote, the tell me about yourself is definitely the biggest factor for the interview because that's how you tell your story. And that's the only time, the best time for you to engage with interviewer.
THE OUTCOME: STRONGEST LEADER IN THE ROOM
And they said that based on your interview, you were by far the strongest leader they connected with.
I appreciate it. Thank you... I really appreciate the support too.
“So you kind of have, make yourself gain the confidence. And then you're not struggling in just applying job every day. Cause you can get bored and you get dry and then get discouraged.”
