The Challenge

Nine years without touching his resume or LinkedIn, and a scarcity mindset carried over from consulting firms that would cut people without warning.

The Shift

Rebuilt his language from production talk ('hit your numbers') into strategic positioning tied directly to his leaders' own goals and OKRs.

The Outcome

Promoted from senior manager to senior director at Udemy, with an updated title, a pay increase, and stock options.

A Note From The Founder

Olivia Gamber, CEO

Alberto came to us as the top national sales leader at one of the biggest names in ed-tech. On paper, nothing about his career looked stuck. He was hitting numbers, running a strong team, and had just been through a near-miss at a director role elsewhere.

But underneath the performance was a mindset built for survival, not leadership. Nine years in the same production identity, inherited from consulting firms where you competed or got cut. A resume he hadn't opened in nearly a decade. A quiet fear of picking up the phone with a CMO or CEO, even though he had every right to that room.

Alberto didn't come to us because he was failing. He came because he could feel the ceiling of his own bubble, and he wanted to get ahead of it before the next round of change decided for him.

SURVIVAL MODE, TOP PERFORMER

Alberto

I need to get my resume up to date. I haven't updated it in like nine years. My LinkedIn has just the minimum basics. So I have some catching up to do there.

It goes back to a little bit of your teachings about the mindset, which is my biggest thing... I've been in survival mode through all these consulting firms that will cut you really quick if it's up or out. And so it's always this competition, step on or be stepped on.

“It was a blessing in disguise, because I really need to update my resume, my LinkedIn profile, keep my network warm.”

REWRITING THE LANGUAGE

Alberto

I need to get the numbers out of my language because I've been there, done that already, have that branding... now it's like elevate my thinking to a new horizon.

So yes, Alberto, the numbers guy always hits his numbers, always going to club, yada yada. But it needs to be Alberto's helping changing the way we do things differently here at Udemy across the globe. And it's like that next level strategic thinker.

Ryan Meinberg

The idea of hitting your numbers is probably the most important aspect of a business because it's revenue generating. But no executive is ever going to hear the terms, hit your numbers and think that's a leader... it's not about what you think is value, but it's about what they think is valuable.

OWNING HIS VALUE

Ryan Meinberg

Alberto, you're the top sales guy, sales leader in the name. Why can't you talk to the CMO and the CEO? ... Alberto for yourself, do you own your value? Because mindset has to be the front runner.

Alberto

What's the difference between a hundred thousand dollar horse and a million dollar horse? The answer is an inch. And so the mindset component is so critical that you don't want to skip on that, because once you have the right foundation, it's like you're going to accelerate your growth 10 times.

Forgiving yourself, like holy smoke, who would on their own figure that out? Because some of that stuff yourself, without knowing it, you could be self-sabotaging yourself.

“Some of us, especially myself included, we're so caught up in our own bubble, our own ecosystem, have been at Udemy for nine plus years.”

STILL MORE WORK TO DO

Alberto

They've updated our titles to director, which is really cool... my manager gave me a nice pay bump, which is really good. And some stock options, which is nice.

Hence the pay bump and the equity and the things along those lines. So I think those are very positive signals.

Olivia Gamber

We got more work to do, Alberto.

Alberto

Yeah, still more work to be done. Got to get to VP.

Ready to Stop Applying?

Alberto was already winning by every visible measure. The work was repositioning him so the people above him could see it too. If you're carrying a title that no longer fits your value, let's talk.
