“Throwing your heart into something is great, but when any one thing becomes all that you stand for, you’re vulnerable to an identity crisis when you pivot to plan B.”

-Reid Hoff Mann, Co-Founder of LinkedIn

Are you looking to break into a new industry?

Do you have trouble communicating your value to the new industries you are targeting?

Are you still lacking clarity on which path you want to go and what’s possible?

The Executive Career Pivoter is someone who knows they have a huge ability to make a big impact on an organization.

The challenge is a career pivot can feel overwhelming because you may lack clarity on where you fit in the market.

Then, once you are able to get clarity on the industry and types of roles you want to target you need to become confident in how you are going to position yourself to that new position.

We have helped hundreds of our executive clients pivot industries, roles, and locations. This is definitely a challenge and many of our clients came to us concerned that they would need to take a pay cut when pivoting.

That is most definitely not true, however, the real challenge is making sure that you select the right target that is going to see your value.

In order to make a career pivot, you will need to understand that you are going to have to overcome a lot of self-limiting beliefs. This is common especially at the executive level where competition is high.

In order to pivot industries successfully at the executive level without taking a pay cut, you need a clear target, a relevant message, and high certainty in yourself.

If there is even a crack in your certainty that you would be able to successfully pivot your career, then that certainty will likely crumble under pressure in the interview.

In order to make sure you set yourself up for success, we recommend that you take the time to really validate your message in the market before you focus on speaking to key executive decision makers who will hire you.

Now, you know that you need to get clarity with your target, message, and your ability to communicate this.

The final shift you need to make is a strategy that decommoditizes you.

Strategies that are not going to be effective for you:

  • Leveraging recruiters - They will see your background on your resume and not be able to understand your value.
  • Online cold applications - Going through online applications will make it extremely difficult to get interviews because you are relying on your resume to do the heavy lifting for a new career path. This is not effective for a successful career pivot.
  • Leading with your resume - Your resume tells the story of your past, not where you want to go next with your career.

Strategies that will work:

  • Have a lot of conversations with executives to get clarity on which parts of your message are getting the most traction in the market so that you can select a target you will be successful in achieving.
  • Build your army of advocates who understand your value and want to help you grow your relationships with decision makers in target companies.
  • Focus on having more conversations with key decision makers so you can understand their problems and present the most relevant value proposition from your experience.
