Are you seeking greater fulfillment in your work?Â
Do you crave working for a company with a mission and a purpose that you are personally excited about?
Are you concerned that the values of the company and leadership you have been in the past were not in alignment with your values as a leader?Â
The Experienced Professional Purpose Seeker is a heart centered leader who wants to make a meaningful impact within a company who is doing good for the world.Â
The good news is that you are highly aware of your personal values and you are no longer willing to sacrifice your alignment with those values for a paycheck.
You know you are worth a six-figure salary, but you are primarily focused on finding an organization with a mission you are passionate for.
The culture, the leadership, and the way you feel coming to work each day is your absolute top priority. You understand the value of your happiness and fulfillment is more important than money alone.Â
The challenge with the Experienced Professional Career Purpose Seeker is that they don’t know how to properly assess companies, leaders, and opportunities against their must have criteria.
They are concerned they will need to end up accepting a new job only to later find out that this company is not in alignment with their core values.
Anytime you are making a career move that is highly purpose driven, you need a process to quickly assess companies so that you don’t waste time speaking to companies that don’t align with you.
The key is to get more proactive on targeting specific organizations rather than relying on the job boards to indicate what opportunities are available to you that would excite you.
This means, what got you here won’t get you there.
To land a role that pays you what you’re worth within an organization with a mission, culture, and leadership team that inspires you, you need to focus on building relationships with executives within those target organizations.Â
It is not enough to simply be great at what you do, you must become great at marketing yourself to the right audience. Hiring at the six-figure level is an emotional sale. Everyone at that level is qualified. The decision becomes more based on the experience you provide and how you’re showing up.
The final shift you need to make is a strategy that decommoditizes you.
Strategies that are not going to be effective for you:
- Leveraging recruiters - Recruiters can be valuable, but they are essentially the gatekeepers. They will not be able to give you the data you need to understand if the opportunity is in alignment with your values.
- Online cold applications - The odds are extremely low for you to land an executive role you love through a cold application. Further, the majority of these roles are not advertised or they are filled before they are advertised.Â
- Leading with your resume - Your resume will overwhelm people and make it challenging for them to advocate for you.
Strategies that will work:
- Build your army of advocates who are in the companies with missions that inspire you.
- Have a lot of conversations with professionals who are doing work that you are curious about to learn more about where you could see yourself fitting.Â
- Focus on having more conversations with key decision makers in your target companies so you can understand their problems and present the most relevant value proposition from your experience.
